Meet the Makers

Meet the Makers

A shared making table — open to experienced craftspeople, emerging makers and people building a new beginning after homelessness. Every hand welcome. Every story worth telling.

A Community at the Making Table

FNB Hobart Makers brings together people who make things with their hands — and with their lives. Whether you have been crafting for decades, are just finding your way into a new skill, or are rebuilding after a period of homelessness, there is a place for you at this table.

  • Experienced craftspeople — bringing depth, technique and generosity of knowledge.
  • Emerging makers — developing a practice, exploring materials and building confidence.
  • People with lived experience of homelessness — rebuilding stability and connection through skilled, meaningful work.

All makers are connected to FNB Hobart's broader mutual-aid community. The shop is one way we support each other.

Your Story, Your Way

Each maker on this page chooses what to share. You decide your name and how it appears, the pronouns shown alongside it, whether to include a photo and what it shows, and as much or as little of your story as feels right. Nothing is published without your review and approval.

You are the author of your own profile. We will ask, listen and only publish what you have agreed to. If you want to change or remove your profile at any time, just let us know.

Karl — Artisan | Shark Skin Wallets

Karl

Work & Materials

Karl creates distinctive wallets and pouches using shark skin, combining handcraft with natural materials gathered from the Tasmanian bush.

His process begins with gathering tree bark, which he uses to create a natural dye. The bark and shark skins are placed together in a bucket and left to soak for weeks, allowing the natural colour to develop in the skin.

Once the dyeing process is complete, Karl sews and weaves the prepared shark skin into wallets and pouches, transforming the material into practical, individual pieces.

Interests

Natural materials, traditional techniques, bush gathering, natural dyeing and the patient process of transforming raw materials into useful objects.

Their Story

Karl’s work begins long before a wallet or pouch takes shape. It starts in the Tasmanian bush, gathering bark and preparing the natural dye. The bark and shark skins then spend weeks soaking together, as the colour slowly develops.

Only after this patient process does the hands-on work of sewing and weaving begin. Each finished piece reflects time, resourcefulness and a distinctive approach to working with natural materials.

Karl sells his handmade wallets and pouches at Salamanca Market in Hobart, where visitors can discover his work and meet the maker behind it.

Christiaan McCann — Wood Carver

Christiaan McCann · Woodcarver | Working With Tasmanian Timber

Work & Materials

Interests

Woodcraft, traditional hand skills, developing small creative projects, and finding practical ways for making to contribute to community life.

Their Story

It is a way to use skills developed over many years, work with the natural character of timber and create things that people can enjoy and use. Emerging Makers & Community Contributors

Work & Materials

Interests

Making, learning, experimenting, sharing skills and finding ways to participate in community life.

Their Story
