The Goal Was Never Just to Start a Business | Hobart Makers | Small Projects

FNB Hobart Makers began under the name Microenterprise Builder with a simple question: what happens when someone who is locked out of conventional employment has an opportunity to make something of their own?

The goal was never simply to create businesses. It was to create opportunities for people to use their skills, interests and creativity in ways that could lead somewhere — whether that meant a small income, a pathway into employment, greater confidence, or simply the experience of making something and having someone value it.

The original idea was to start with arts and crafts because they provided a practical way in. A person could make something, learn a skill, develop a product, experiment with selling it and gradually discover what they were capable of. The business could grow around the person rather than asking the person to fit into a conventional business model.

That thinking remains at the heart of FNB Hobart Makers today.

We provide tools, materials, practical skills, encouragement and the infrastructure to help people turn an idea into something real. Sometimes that becomes a business. Sometimes it becomes a job. Sometimes it becomes a project that remains small.

And that’s okay.

The maker leads the project. They make it happen. We are the tools.

For me, that’s the real goal of FNB Hobart Makers: creating small economic opportunities for people who may not have found a place in the usual system, and seeing what becomes possible when someone is given the opportunity to make something of their own.
